ARISE2Read is a serving ministry focusing on 3rd grade literacy. Volunteer mentors, from throughout the community, assist 2nd grade students in strengthening their reading skills by devoting one hour per week mentoring to two students. Using the team read approach, students receive one-on-one coaching twice a week, focusing on simple, but essential, sight words and phrases.

ARISE2Read mentors give freely of their time and attention, two priceless commodities that allow children to thrive. The quality time children and mentors spend together builds close relationships, providing opportunities to show care and compassion to the youngest and most vulnerable of God’s children.

Many of the children served through this ministry live in poverty; the best weapon against poverty is education, and reading is fundamental to a good education. Students who aren’t reading proficiently by the third grade are six times as likely to leave school without graduating. Arise2Read positively impacts the lives of children, teachers, parents, and the community by providing students with individualized tutoring during one of the most critical years for students. ARISE2Read provides an opportunity to Save a child. Save a Family. Save a city while showing Christ’s love in a very tangible way.

Currently ARISE2Read is active within two Tipton County public schools, Covington Integrated Arts Academy and Crestview Elementary School. Local training is provided for volunteers to serve in Tipton County. Contact the Director of Outreach at Covington FUMC for more information or to volunteer.
